Strait of Hormuz Traffic Choked to Trickle
Only ten ships were recorded transiting the strait during the period — six pushing eastward from the Arabian Gulf into the Oman Gulf, with a mere four making the return passage.
AIS maritime tracking data logged the following eastbound vessels: the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier Kaia, sailing from Iran to Oman; the Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged bulk carrier Kaiser, running from Iraq to Oman; the Iran-flagged bulk carrier Bavand, heading from Iran to India; the Angola-flagged LPG tanker Axon I, traveling from China to the UAE; the Comoros-flagged general cargo ship Gulf King, from Iran to Oman; the Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier Star Laura, from Iran to Oman; and the Comoros-flagged aggregates carrier Arad 10, outbound from Iran.
Westbound traffic was notably sparse. The Curacao-flagged asphalt/bitumen tanker Argo Maris made the crossing from Oman to Iran, while the Tanzania-flagged general cargo ship Edris departed Iran, and the India-flagged cargo vessel Msv Al Shams No 1500 was tracked heading from Somalia toward Bahrain.
The subdued commercial activity unfolded as Tehran launched an unexpected diplomatic initiative Monday, proposing to reopen the strategically crucial strait and bring an end to hostilities — while seeking to defer nuclear talks to a separate, later track. The overture reached Washington via back-channel mediators, among them Pakistan, as negotiations over Iran's nuclear program remain mired in stalemate, according to a news website.
No immediate reaction from US officials has been publicly recorded, leaving the proposal's reception — and the strait's commercial future — hanging in the balance.
